In July 2008, a grant was awarded to support the planning and implementation of
a Binational Health Week fair held October 4, 2008, in Wentzville. This
health fair attracted 117 participants from St. Charles, Lincoln, and Warren
counties. Over twenty service providers featured health screenings such as
: blood pressure, BMI, cholesterol, blood glucose, spinal, dental, and vision
screenings as well as providing nutrition and health information. Eight
interpreters were available, and a doctor was on hand to review the results.
Additionally, there was a blood drive with 17 participants presenting for
donations: 12 first timers and 85% were Hispanic/Latino.

Fiscal Year
05-06
In April 2006, Alianzas awarded $3,000 to assist in the Spanish translation and development of the “Dining with Diabetes” curriculum, which was used to
inform Hispanic/Latino audiences of healthy food choices for people with diabetes and healthy versions of traditional foods and cooking techniques that use new or
more healthful ingredients.
As a result, Hispanics/Latinos in the east central region received information about diabetes in a culturally appropriate manner, as the curriculum was available in Spanish and it promoted the preparation of traditional dishes. Ultimately, the participants were afforded the opportunity to learn how they might live healthier lives.
