Facilitating partnerships with Hispanic/Latino communities in Missouri

SOUTHEAST REGION

Fiscal Year 09
In June 2009, a grant was awarded to support an English as a Second Language (ESL) program, “Sí se puede (Yes we can) – New Citizenship,” of the Migrant Whole Health Outreach, Inc. (MWHO) in Kennett. The course is designed to provide educational skill for low resource Spanish speaking residents of Dunklin and Pemiscot counties to pass their United States Citizenship and Naturalization examination.

On June 18th, 2009, Alianzas facilitated a Cultural Awareness Training targeted towards medical interpreters at the Migrant Whole Health Outreach Center in Kennett.  Those in attendance included: Regional UME staff, community partners, and volunteers interpreters.  Twenty-two participants completed the end of workshop survey and when asked if their level of cultural understanding increased because of attending the workshop, 14 strongly agreed and 6 agreed.  In addition, when asked if “the cultural awareness methods to support Hispanic/Latino residents were clear and concise,” 13 strongly agreed and 8 agreed.  Overall, feedback about the workshop was good and the awareness and knowledge gained by participants will support continued collaborations and outreach efforts with Hispanic populations in this region.  In addition, one Regional Specialist attended the Alianzas Cultural Academy as well as the training at the Migrant Whole Health Outreach Center.
