Facilitating partnerships with Hispanic/Latino communities in Missouri

WEST CENTRAL REGION

Fiscal Year 09

In April 2009, a grant was awarded to support Binational Health Week, Dining with Diabetes, Elder Health Issues at Guadalupe Centers Inc., Festival of Health Plaza de Niños, and other general administration Hispanic outreach efforts. Continued partnerships and the leveraging of resources are used to provide much needed support to Hispanic newcomers and other immigrants in the region. This collaboration continues to promote good will and harmony in neighborhoods that have experienced dramatic growth in demographic shifts.

One Regional Specialist and one community member attended the Alianzas Cultural Academy.  In additional, numerous community volunteers support the Academy too.

Fiscal Year 06-07
In February 2007, Alianzas awarded $1,000.00 to support the "Dining with Diabetes" curriculum; $500.00 to purchase the Rosetta Stone language-learning curriculum; and $1,000.00 to support the Bi-National Health Week initiative in Kansas City.

Fiscal Year 05-06
In April 2006, Alianzas awarded $3,000 to support the planning and implementation of the third annual Bi-National Health Week in Kansas City, the networking activities of the Northeast Advisory and Access Group, and the coordination of a newly forming coalition of services providers in eastern Jackson County.

As a result, networks and coalitions of University of Missouri Extension staff, service providers, and community leaders were afforded the opportunity to become more aware of and learn about the Hispanic/Latino culture and the belief systems that are emerging in Missouri, and they work together to accommodate the unmet challenges of Hispanic/Latino immigrants and the communities that receive them in the west central region.
